AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO ENHANCE WATER USE AND DROUGHT TOLERANCE IN TEXAS COTTON PRODUCTION

In this study, we evaluated four cotton varieties (FiberMax 9170, Delta Pine 1044, Phytogen 499, and Phytogen 375) using four irrigation management approaches (90% ET replacement, 45% ET replacement, irrigation based on remote sensing, and dryland ) at the Chillicothe Research Station in the Texas Rolling Plains region. A detailed set of data were collected to study the physiological response of these cultivars to irrigations. These measurements included plant height, leaf area index, canopy temperature, canopy reflectance, volumetric water content, number of bolls and boll distribution, lint yield and fiber quality. We are currently summarizing reflectance and canopy temperature measurements. At the end of the season, plots were harvested and lint samples were analyzed for fiber quality characteristics. Lint yields were significantly different among irrigations treatments. The highest lint yield was achieved with the 90% ET replacement treatment, followed by irrigation based on the remote sensing-based spectral crop coefficient method, 45% ET replacement and dryland treatments. PHY375 was consistently high yielding among all irrigation treatments. The tallest variety was PHY499, but it produced less lint yield compared to other varieties. Plant height, lint yield, and fiber properties were not affected by tillage treatments. Except for fiber elongation, irrigation and cultivar types significantly affected all other fiber quality parameters.
