Dick Cooper, Kansas Cotton Association

Cotton is a relatively new commodity grown in Kansas with primary development of the industry within the last 10 years. Access to both general public through traditional media sources is limited. A booth at the Kansas State Fair, with attendance annually averaging one million, gives the growing industry access to a large number of people at very little cost relative to impact received. The overall objective of this project is to increase awareness and create support for both cotton production and cotton products. The booth will have product displays, educational material, and will conduct face to face interactions as well as interviews. The Kansas State Fair is located in Hutchinson, Kansas, and operates for around 10 days in September (time may vary each year). Operation of the booth is provided by High Plains Cotton, Inc. The booth will operate from 9:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. daily.

The 2012 Kansas State Fair was held in Hutchinson, Kansas, from September 7 through 16. The Kansas Cotton Association was responsible for providing folks to "man the booth." Again as in past years, the booth was one of the main attractions in the Pride of Kansas building, and hundreds of people each day visited the booth, asked questions and received answers regarding cotton production and cotton products. Numerous school groups and their teachers/sponsors also visited the booth.

The Kansas Cotton Association also operated an educational booth in "Agri-land," which is in an adjacent area to the cotton booth. A mini cotton gin was used for ginning demonstrations and cottonseed and lint from the gin were given as handouts. Agri-land is an extension of Kids in the Classroom and is operated by all commodity groups who choose to participate. This added to the educational efforts and also attracted more visitors to the cotton booth for more in-depth discussions about cotton. This project will continue in 2013.
