MEXICO COTTON WINTER NURSERY

Don C. Jones, Cotton Incorporated

The primary objective of the counter cyclical breeding program in Tecoman, Mexico is to advance generation of materials for yield trials and/or nursery evaluation.  A secondary objective is to allow for selection of material based on fiber quality to enhance genetic gain from selection. A very large effort was undertaken to develop crosses and segregating materials for the Nested Association Mapping Population project. The 2011-12 planting season involved twelve users from public breeding programs in the United States that were supported by Cotton Incorporated.  In addition to these users several private company breeders utilized the site and fully reimbursed the program for their expenses. Excellent quality and quantity seed was returned to breeders for use in the 2012 summer growing season.
