COTTON BREEDERS SEED INCREASE PROGRAM
Jay Subramani, Arizona Board of Regents
There were 86 lines in the Advanced seed increase this year and were broken down as such: Fred Bourland - 18, Richard Percy - 5, Todd Campbell - 11, David Weaver - 20, Peng Chee - 28, and Ted Wallace - 4.
Almost every single plot recovered well from the LaybyPro damage. New shoots and leaves began popping out, along with squares and flowers. All advanced seed increase plots started to bear good number of bolls. When I walked through the field about 3 weeks before the study had the final irrigation, I was able to clearly see some differences. The lower half of the plants that had herbicide damage didn't have any bolls. New bolls set midway on the plants. Having noticed the study was irrigated for an additional two cycles to carry the later set bolls to maturity. The advanced increase was defoliated on the 15th of October.
We had 993 lines of the short plots are usually 10' long with alleys 9' wide. The plots were planted on skip rows. There were 29 plots in a row including a buffer on the north end. Several of Dr. Campbell's lines did not germinate well. Close to 150 lines had very poor stand, several plots had no plants at all.
