JaDecor: a sound solution for reducing interior noise

A smart alternative to paper and paint, the sustainable wallcovering shuts out sound with a .15 NRC

Finding green solutions for minimizing interior noise and shutting out unwanted sound can be difficult and costly, and can make a space feel industrial and bland, says LEED AP and green industry consultant Victoria Johnston. “But there’s a growing movement that's fusing sustainable with functional, and green design is becoming more vibrant and colorful,” adds Johnston.

JaDecor Natural Wallcovering, a unique wall finish created from a patented mixture of natural cotton fibers and minerals, offers design professionals a sustainable interior finish that can help add warmth and control the acoustics in an interior space while providing an attractive, customizable aesthetic.

“JaDecor is part of the functional sustainable design movement and offers comprehensive benefits that green building products have lacked before: warmth, beauty and sound dampening capabilities,” says Johnston, who used JaDecor in an auditorium of a sustainable school building project earlier this year.

Chicago-based testing facility Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories recently tested JaDecor’s sound absorbency properties using the Reverberation Room Method, and assigned the wallcovering an impressive .15 Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC).

With cotton as its main ingredient, JaDecor’s acoustic and thermal properties are inherent. “Most people think of cotton as being absorbent of water, but cotton absorbs sound and heat just as effectively,” says Tom Wedegaertner, director of Cottonseed Research for Cotton Incorporated. “Cotton fibers, by nature, are extremely sponge-like.”

Sound absorption properties of building materials are important not only for the reduction of everyday noises such as planes, trains, cars, dogs, music and neighbors, but also for controlling reverberation time for speech delivery in large rooms and promoting fuller sound in concert halls and theatres.

“Acoustic tile and carpet are typically applied to a single surface. However, because JaDecor is often applied to four or five surfaces in a room, each surface continues to absorb sound waves as they reflect from surface to surface creating a multiplier effect,” notes Tim Bell, owner of Specialty Finishes, Springfield, Neb., and exclusive distributor of JaDecor Natural Wallcovering.

By reflecting noise off multiple surfaces and back into a room, JaDecor not only works to trap noise, it reduces sounds that echo, like voices and clanking dishes.

“JaDecor absorbs most of the noise in my restaurant and keeps it quiet. It even helps as an insulation, it creates warmth,” says Oscar Colmenares, owner of Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Omaha, Neb., who had JaDecor installed in his restaurant three years ago and again when he expanded the restaurant last year. “JaDecor has a lot of benefits working at one time.”

According to, an alliance of educators, experts and design professionals dedicated to promoting the importance of acoustics in the architecture, design, construction and building communities, JaDecor’s NRC rating ranks similarly to other common interior materials that have acoustic value, such as indoor-outdoor carpeting, cork floor tiles, wood and light weight drapery, each of which enjoys an NRC between .05-.20.
