Cotton Incorporated's resident stain guru, Norma Keyes, has some helpful tips to educate on how to eat, drink, be merry, and remain stain-free!

During the winter holidays, the Ask Norma section of www.TheFabricofOurlives.com is inundated with emails about solutions to special, seasonal stains. Some of the most common stains during the holidays are listed below, along with Norma’s solutions.

Here are the most common Holiday stains and Norma’s tips on how to best treat them:

CANDLE WAX:
If the wax is still soft, freeze to harden then gently scrape off the excess wax. Spray the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Place stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm iron to transfer the wax to the paper towels. Replace the paper towels frequently to absorb more wax and prevent transferring the stain to other places on the fabric. Wash the item. If any of the stain remains, spray with a pre-wash stain remover and rewash. Follow care label instructions for the safe use of bleach. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

EGGNOGG:
Pre-treat or soak the stain for at least 30 minutes, using the detergent manufacturer’s instructions for soaking stains. If the stain is old, soak for several hours. Wash according to the care label instructions and use bleach, if allowed. Repeat if necessary. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

PINE RESIN:
Create a mixture of one cup liquid laundry detergent and a few drops of ammonia (using caution). Soak the item in the mixture for at least 30 minutes. Rinse the item followed by a normal wash. Repeat the process if necessary. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

RED FOOD COLORING:
Use a commercial color remover, following the package directions. Wash the item. If the care label allows the use of bleach, mix a solution of ¼ cup bleach per gallon of cool water and soak for 30 minutes. Rinse the item then wash and dry according to the care label instructions.

GRAVY:
Treat the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Wash according to the care label instructions including bleach, if allowed. Repeat if necessary. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

SWEET POTATOES:
Wipe off excess. Flush under cold running water to loosen the stain. Treat the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Wash using bleach if allowed by the care label instructions. Repeat if necessary. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

Candy Cane
Rinse with warm water. Wash and dry according to the care label instructions.

WINE:
Sponge the spot with cool water or soak for about 30 minutes in a basin of cool water. Pre-treat the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Wash the items according to the care label instructions including the use of bleach if allowed. Repeat if necessary. Dry only after the stain has been removed.

SOOT:
Pre-treat the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Wash the item according to the care label instructions including the use of bleach if allowed. If the stain remains, sponge with rubbing alcohol and wash the item again. Dry only after the stain has been removed.
