About the Workshop
The yarn manufacturing workshop will give an overview of spun yarn manufacturing critical to the understanding and development of products. The workshop will highlight conventional and state-of-the-art techniques necessary to meet yarn performance and fashion specifications in today’s products. Examples of woven and knit fabrics using cotton and cotton-blended yarns will be discussed.
Prerequisites
This is a beginner level workshop; however, knowledge of fabric construction would be helpful.
Topics Covered
- The basic yarn manufacturing process for cotton and cotton NATURAL BLENDSTM.
- Fiber selection for best yarn performance.
- Fiber preparation for spinning including opening, cleaning, carding, combing, core spinning, plying, cabling, etc.
- Discussions of the three basic spinning systems: ring, open end (rotor), and air jet.
- Presentations of fabrics comparing the use of the following yarn concepts:
- Carded versus combed.
- Comparison of spinning systems for cotton (ring, open end, and air jet).
- Singles versus plied yarns.
- Hard versus stretch yarns.
- Novelty yarn applications.
- Fiber dyed yarn concepts.
- Others.
- Group discussions of yarn problems and design opportunities.
