About the Workshop

The yarn manufacturing workshop will give an overview of spun yarn manufacturing critical to the understanding and development of products. The workshop will highlight conventional and state-of-the-art techniques necessary to meet yarn performance and fashion specifications in today’s products. Examples of woven and knit fabrics using cotton and cotton-blended yarns will be discussed.

Prerequisites

This is a beginner level workshop; however, knowledge of fabric construction would be helpful.

Topics Covered

• The basic yarn manufacturing process for cotton and cotton NATURAL BLENDSTM.
• Fiber selection for best yarn performance.
• Fiber preparation for spinning including opening, cleaning, carding, combing, core spinning, plying, cabling, etc.
• Discussions of the three basic spinning systems:  ring, open end (rotor), and air jet.
• Presentations of fabrics comparing the use of the following yarn concepts:
• Carded versus combed.
• Comparison of spinning systems for cotton (ring, open end, and air jet).
• Singles versus plied yarns.
• Hard versus stretch yarns.
• Novelty yarn applications.
• Fiber dyed yarn concepts.
• Others.
• Group discussions of yarn problems and design opportunities.
