Finishing Research Finishing Research

The first priority for Finishing Research has been creating innovations such as the Tough Cotton™ finish, Wicking Windows™ technology, Storm Denim™ garments and others. Finishing Research includes analytical services and applied research centered on finishing, chemical analysis, and product safety/environmental issues.  Responsibility for occupational safety and health compliance for the company is shared with Administration.

Textile Chemistry Research Lab Analytical services are performed by two laboratories:  analytical chemistry and spectroscopy.  These laboratories support research projects within the company.  Through cooperation with Dyeing Research and Technology Implementation, testing is provided to the industry from the farm to retail.  In addition to standard analytical test methods, a variety of instrumental spectroscopic techniques are used to identify sources of problems and to provide information to the research staff.

Applied research covers both chemical and physical evaluations. Much of the research is done in cooperation with chemical companies. This applications research is performed in our Finishing Research Laboratory. In order to enhance end product performance, the Finishing Research Laboratory explores not only new finishes, but also innovative methods for application. These finishes may be either chemical (softeners, wrinkle resistance, and water or oil repellent) or mechanical (sanding, napping, calendering) or a combination of the two.

Although research is focused on the chemical and mechanical aspects of dyeing and finishing, collaboration with other departments within PD&I ensures the best and most appropriate yarns, fabrics, and procedures are used for each new development.  Economics and ease of manufacturing are also major considerations in applied research

Finishing Research also provides assistance to Global Account Management in the form of technical writing and information. All research is documented in reports, technical bulletins, and published papers. Presentations are often made to industry groups both in-house and outside.
